There are also photovoltaic cells made of more expensive materials, such as gallium arsenide, but the increased prices of these equipments make them less affordable therefore less popular among average users.

In regular residences, solar energy panels can be used to provide electricity for running lighting systems, outdoor lamps and other landscape lighting items. The systems will work by converting the capture solar rays into electricity during daytime, while during nighttime the energy stored inside the solar battery will be used for powering the electronic devices.

Also, solar energy produced by photovoltaic panels can be utilized for running water pumps and filters in swimming pools, for powering TVs, laptops and even small vehicles! As you can see, the applications of solar cells and panels are almost limitless and as the technology in this field advances, new applications will probably be discovered!

Solar Energy Panels as Water and Air Heaters

When it comes to water or air heating, solar energy panels or systems can be used actively or passively. The first way of using this renewable energy source refers to installing systems including electrical and mechanical devices besides the typical solar panels.

Passive solar energy is obtained by simply installing some windows in that part of the building which is more exposed to sun during daytime. These windows or glass panels and tubes can be mounted on the roof or against walls, but in this last case they'll probably be less efficient.

The key in passive solar systems is to place them facing the sun as much as possible. As the sunrays pass through the mounted windows, the indoor air is heated and this can be a good method for saving some money during wintertime.

Also, water can be heated passively through some tubes made of special glass and mounted on the roof. If we refer to swimming or spa basins, the things are even simpler: as long as these pools are placed in a sunny area, the water will be automatically warmed by sunrays during daytime.

But passive solar systems have the disadvantage of not being able to store the obtained energy or heat. So in case you're looking for a method of heating the domestic water and saving money at the same time, traditional solar energy panels are the best alternative.

These panels are usually connected to a water tank and some tubes through which water is circulated using electrical pumps and filters that clean the heated water. Including batteries with high storage capacity, these systems are able to warm the water during nighttime and keep it at a certain temperature until sunrise, when new energy is generated and the cycle is repeated.

Solar Energy Panels for Remote Locations

Both electricity and heating obtained from solar panels and arrays can be very useful in remote locations, where no other energy source is available. In less developed countries, this form of renewable energy can actually increase the quality of life by providing heat, warm and clean water for domestic use, as well as electricity for small equipments.

Considering the fact that, typically, no grid connections are available in such locations, solar energy panels could be the perfect choice, as they would surely be able to fulfill all the requests that might occur in regular houses.

The only problem is that solar systems are usually pretty expensive so people in remote locations may not have enough funds for such investments. Also, they may not be familiar with this form of energy and may not have the knowledge therefore some solar energy education could also be very useful in such places!
