How does the solar electric fence work?

A solar powered electric fence is actually a strand of wires carried around the garden or area you want to protect.

Each fence is made of a single fiber of wire, isolated by the metal support that maintains the entire structure in the earth. The isolation is realized by a bobbin that can be made of ceramic, glass or rubber. The wire is connected to the charge generator and above the charger is the solar panel, mounted usually in a spot that enables the system to obtain a higher amount of sunlight during daytime.

Also, the second terminal of the generator is connected to ground, in order to avoid electrical accidents. Sometimes more ground rods are required to keep the device safe, especially when the solar powered electric fence is very long or the soil is very dry. The solar panels exposed to sunlight provide electrical energy needed by the energizer in order to produce an electrical impulse and generate a high voltage current (about 8kV every second). Although it's not life threatening or painful, this electrical impulse keeps invaders away from your garden and livestock. This is why it's not recommended to work around the solar powered electric fence without wearing rubber gloves and footwear.

What else should I know before purchasing a solar electrical fence?

Here are a few things that you must keep in mind before shelling out money for procuring an electric fence

  • If you want your solar panels to provide more energy to the fence, you should place the charger in direct sunlight, facing south.

  • Prior to attaching the charger to the fence, make sure you expose it to sunlight for at least 24 hours. This way you can have it completely charged and properly working.

  • After you placed the energizer on the structure, check the voltage power with a tester. Repeat this procedure whenever you have the time and tools, it's useful and helpful in detecting charge distribution and problems that may occur within time.

  • From time to time, check out whether anything has fallen across the wires or drained the battery to earth. Also, try to remove the objects around the wire and the plants growing under the solar powered electric fence, as they may come in contact with the electrical structures, damaging the fence.

  • If different materials are used for the wires and grounding - cooper and steel for example - the metallic parts will surely corrode, resulting in a weaker contact. Obviously, weaker contacts mean less powerful electrical shocks, therefore an increased possibility for your livestock to escape the surrounded area.

If you decide purchasing a solar electric fence, you may be overwhelmed by the various types of wires, energizers and batteries available on the market.

So in order to make sure you bought the right items, try to establish your requirements and needs clearly and keep them in mind when looking for the best solar powered electric fence.

  • Don't rush into buying the cheapest fence, as it may not be suitable for the area you want to protect. Before purchasing an electrical fence, take measurements and write down the circumference of the garden or place you're going to protect with the new structure.

  • Buy a longer wire if you intent to increase the number of animals or crops you want to isolate. This is a very important detail, because a larger fence requires more electricity, therefore you'll need to purchase a more powerful battery or charger and larger solar panels.

  • In case you already have a solar powered electric fence and want to extend it in order to cover a more extended area, you'll need to buy more wires and add them to the ones you already have installed. But you shouldn't do this unless you are absolutely sure your charger is able to power the entire length that is going to result after the adjustments!
